Security on Public Hotspots

question

Which of these activities are safe on a public WiFi hotspot?

  • Logging into your email account
  • Logging into your social media account
  • Shopping online
  • Checking your banking account
  • None of these
  • Not sure

Main insights

Connecting to an unsecured public hotspot puts personal data at risk. However, only 66% of respondents agree that none of the activities – checking email, logging into a social media account, shopping online and checking a bank account – is safe on public Wi-Fi. Shopping online on a public hotspot is considered to be safe by 21% of respondents. Brits tend to underestimate a potential threat of this activity the most, as 29% of test participants from UK say it is safe. This brings up an interesting contradiction: while checking a bank account on a public hotspot is assumed to be risky, entering banking credentials to make a purchase online is considered to be safer.
